Believe in Your Dreams

When I was college student, my mother used to send me pocket sized cards to carry around. These cards were the size and shape of a credit, yet greatest value in the card was not that I could take the card out and go on a shopping spree and put myself into debt. The intrinsic value was that I could knowingly take out the card, and realize that I had nothing to swipe, nor anything to buy with this card, it was just to believe everything what was printed on the card.  There was something great about these card, as I could take it out whenever, and realize that it would not open doors to the dorm, yet rather it would open doors in my mind.  It was these cards that inspired me, and they inspired me to search for a deeper meaning, to go after things that nobody else went after, and to challenge myself.

One of these cards that I would proudly pull out of my wallet was entitled, “Don’t Quit” and this cards was not just a plain card, it was something that was finely decorated.  It gave me a feeling of joy to pull it out, and read the poem attached to it.  Although this card remained snuggled in my wallet along with various other cards most of the time, it really was a great inspiration to take out every once and a while and read.

In my wallet, there were a few other cards with quotes on them, although I read these quotes aloud periodically, there was nothing like reading the “Don’t Quit” poem.  From these cards, one of my favorite quotes was read by Ralph Waldo Emerson, which stated “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” I believed in this quote, and thought it was so true, and there’s nothing greater than having a great dream.

What’s special about this poem is within the poem, and from the words, “Don’t Quit” the words “Believe in Your Dreams” also can come to mind.  The antithesis of quitting is believing, and taking action.  If you have a vision, it’s not just good to think about it or dream about it, take action.  Now, it’s not always that easy, as we all have our challenges, yet what’s great about taking action, is finding others who will see your passion, finding others who will make your belief and dream shine.  And there is only way to go from there, and that’s to go for it.

My assessment of what’s great about the “Don’t Quit” poem is that sometimes challenges can be seen as opportunities, that turns or twists in our lives can be seen as roads uphill. That mistakes, or bumps in the road can be seen as great realizations.  When we get knocked down, we figure out a way to get up again, when we feel the wind blowing hard up against us, we hold on tighter, and we can grow stronger from this wind.  This is what dreaming is all about, figuring out a plan of action. A dream is the first step to planning.

It’s interesting to think, as many people who just stuck it out, despite the challenges, have made great things happen in the lives of others.  Some things to think about: Where would Disney World be today, if Walt Disney stopped after the first cartoon? Would Michael Jordan be an owner if he would’ve quit after he was cut from his high school team? How about any of the great stars who have made it to the top, where would they all be today? It’s interesting to think about, as all these people who had challenges, grew stronger. It’s the challenges in our lives that make use stronger, smarter, and more enthusiastic.  It’s the dream that solves a problem in lives of many, or simply makes people wake up and smile that makes people go for their dreams.  Despite it all, through thick and think, great things do happen, and they only happen for those who don’t give up on their dream, are the ones who ultimately make great waves.

Likewise, with FreezeCrowd, it’s been a long time since I’ve wanted to do this site or had ideas for an interactive social site for college students, yet I’ve encountered challenges.  Sure, we all make mistakes, yet I stand here today in belief, believing more each and every day.  I believe in the vision, still focusing on my goal to launch the site. Every day I work on something, and think about things, and come up with visionary ideas that will make a difference in people’s lives.  Every day I’m plugging away on the computer.

I know that this poem is one that I can look to today, and any day. Entrepreneurship is about tenacity, it’s about fighting the battle, and working towards a dream. It’s about focusing on goals, yet more so not letting the wind or the turbulence get in the way.

Enjoy the poem!  Believe in Your Dreams!

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit-
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint in the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It might be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit -
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

Believe in your dreams, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. It takes hard work, and passion to make great things happen. Think outside the brain, and when the lightbulb goes on, figure out the way to rise to the occassion.  In closing, believe in the mind power, and the power of the dream!
